Billie Charland's life is complicated. This will definitely be a spoiler alert so if you dont want to know don't continue reading please.The characters all move emotionally fast in this and at times I kept finding myself saying `really!?' Example Billie and cat have not even gone out on a date and we quickly see them vowing undying love and wanting to be life partners. Now I am not a cynical love person but actually the opposite and love romances but I even found how fast they moved to be unrealistic and then when you add in the extended family already in love with the new additions it was puzzling. Next major event occurred when cat is raped by billies ex husband. The reader is there for the rape scene and I absolutely would have liked some foresight that this occurred as I try to avoid these story lines. Cat ends up pregnant and they keep the child. There is then a fight of prejudice in the community they buy a home in, then battling for marriage equality and adoption rights. There is alot in this book that happens so quickly and in an unrealistic time frame especially considering criminal charges. A rape victim almost will always testify even if DNA is positive on the victim and the suspect will not just pled out to the charges just because. And in this scenarios book it would be garuanteed the victim would have been attacked in court by the defense and good luck getting a rape case to trial in less then 2 years and countless motion and suppression hearings prior to an actual trial occurring. Normally I can lose myself easily in a book but I had some difficulty here. I really did like the characters though alot and I find I want to read the second book so if you can over look some of the things listed you will enjoy it.

Billie Charland is a single parent holding down two jobs. She is a paralegal during the day and an aerobics instructor in the evening. Caitlain O'Grady is an anesthetist and ER doctor. Caitlain joins Billie's aerobics class and there is an immediate attraction between them. But Billie has commitments elsewhere after her classes. Not exactly conducive to starting up any sort of relationship. But soon something happens to change all that. Secrets are revealed by both Billie and Caitlain. Will either or both of them be able to move on to love one another?
This is another excellent book by Karen D Badger. A highly enjoyable read covering some serious topics. I first read this online ages ago. It is even better now. I look forward to the next book in the Commitment series.
In A Family Way addresses a number of issues. The characters fight prejudice and a neighborhood that is at first hostile to the lesbians who infiltrate their street. Billie eventually finishes a law degree and becomes a crusader to change the state laws. The main story however deals with creating a family. They face issues of acceptance by relatives, cooperation from school authorities and the adoption of children. There is a lot going on in this story, but it captures a picture of what lesbians go through in trying to gain acceptance for their families.
Karen Badger has experience as a writer from stories she has posted online and previously published books. She knows how to create characters and to make a story flow. She has created a book that makes for pleasant reading.
I enjoyed the book very much. The Charland family endured many real life disasters. Their love endured and kept them together. I would recommend this book to my friends.
Warning...if you suffer from any type of depression, don't read this book. The author unnecessarily puts her characters through dramatic events of hate and violence over and over again. I feel like this book was poorly edited. I also feel like the editor and publisher should have encouraged the author to complete this book in half it's length. I won't be reading anything else by this author!
Really do not know why I have waited so long to read this novel. The beginning of a great series if the rest are as good as this . Do yourself a favor and read this and enjoy.
